Which Degree to Choose in 2026: CS, SE, AI, DS, or CY?

A practical breakdown of tech degrees based on market scope, accessibility, AI impact, and freelancing opportunities in Pakistan.

This is one of the most frequently asked questions by students who have just completed their 12th grade and want to pursue a bachelor’s degree in IT. Honestly, it is an important decision because it heavily influences your career trajectory.

Here are the main factors that should influence your decision:

1. Interest

Researchers have different opinions on how learning is linked to interest. Some argue that even if you don’t have an initial interest in a subject, you can learn it easily if you follow the correct pathway. Others argue that interest is absolutely essential to excel. I leave it up to you to decide how much you prioritize the interest factor.

However, there is a catch: sometimes we over-fantasize about a subject. Let’s say you pick cybersecurity. Once you dive into it, all of a sudden it might feel overwhelming or boring. This happens when your interest is not backed by trials and research. I generally recommend exploring different fields and doing a few relevant tasks to understand the practical role before locking in a decision.

2. Scope

The scope of these tech fields is quite similar over the years because they are highly interrelated. For instance, if a company is developing an AI agent, they need Data Scientists for model training and data handling. Once the model is built, they need Software Engineers to develop a SaaS application around it.

Currently, the scope of AI is skyrocketing, but nobody knows how long that will last. AI has done a great job assisting with cyber-related tasks and software development, but it is not capable or intelligent enough to train new models autonomously. Even if it tries, the output degrades and this is known as Model Collapse. This is exactly why AI Engineers are in such high demand.

3. Job Market

Because AI Engineers are in demand, the job market is huge but mostly in places where AI models are actually created, like Silicon Valley. You cannot expect to land a core AI Engineering job in Pakistan for at least the next five years. Training generative AI models is far more expensive than you might think. Similarly, Data Science roles are abundant in foreign countries, but limited locally.

Then comes Cybersecurity. The local market is somewhat mild because, while many software houses in Pakistan need security specialists, they often don’t fully understand the need. Remote jobs in cybersecurity are not ideal, and AI has affected it the least because it is a highly sensitive job where one wrong command can cost millions.

CS/SE is the best choice in the context of the job market. Remote work is highly feasible, offering flexible hours, operational cost-cutting, and work-from-home benefits. Almost every other street has a software house. The only culprit here is saturation. Because of its ease of learning and high perks, a lot of people are jumping into it without doing their research. That being said, senior software engineers are still making a great amount of money.

4. Practical Roles

We often limit our perspective when it comes to the practical day-to-day jobs of each field. We assume a Software Engineer just makes applications, or a Data Scientist just watches over a data center.

There are a bunch of sub-domains in each of these fields. Even if you don’t like coding much, you can still be a software engineer and manage projects. Explore all the practical roles of a field before making a final decision. For instance, under the Software Engineering umbrella, you can be a:

  • Mobile App Developer
  • Game Developer
  • DevOps Engineer
  • UI/UX Designer
  • Project Manager
  • QA Engineer

5. AI Impact

As discussed earlier, AI is the least impacted field, whereas Software Engineering is currently the most impacted one. Cybersecurity is highly sensitive, so it remains largely unaffected. CS is a generic field, but if your work is close to hardware, it is not impacted much. Data Science requires deep domain experts, which AI cannot handle autonomously yet.

Here is the order of fields most impacted to least impacted by AI: SE > CS > DS > CY > AI

6. Accessibility

Accessibility means how conveniently you can access learning resources and gain practical experience. If you are really ambitious about building something innovative while sitting in Pakistan, you must have access to sufficient resources.

SE absolutely sweeps this category. You can sit on a beach with a laptop and develop your client’s software. There are thousands of free resources on the internet to learn core software engineering and innovate. That is not the case with other domains. You cannot access cybersecurity advance resources or AI model training secrets that easily. Furthermore, AI and CY often require expensive equipment and labs for hands-on experience, which unfortunately are not widely available in Pakistan.

Here is the accessibility ranking: SE > CS > CY > DS > AI

7. Freelancing

This is one of the most important factors for individuals in Pakistan. Because many students belong to middle-class families, they want to support their families financially as soon as possible.

SE wins this category again. Although there are freelancing opportunities available in every domain, they are nowhere close to the volume of Software Engineering contracts.

Here is the freelancing opportunity ranking: SE > CS > CY > DS > AI

The Final Verdict

Conclusively, prioritize the factors that matter most to you and eliminate the fields that are weak in those areas.

  • If you are financially stable, you don’t have to care as much about freelancing. Instead, you can prioritize accessibility and research opportunities.
  • If you are a girl whose family doesn’t allow you to go abroad or work on-site, SE is likely the right option for you.

Once you have selected a field, dive into it with your maximum potential. Looking back only makes you slower.
